Background and Purpose: These days, with the increasing number of elderly people in the world, the amount of sarcopenia is also increasing. Sarcopenia is one of the aging syndromes that has the greatest impact on the independence of the elderly. It can increase the risk of falling, presence of other syndromes and even mortality in people over 65 years old. Regular exercise can be an effective strategy to delay sarcopenia and improve the quality of life of the elderly.
Methods: The research method is semi-experimental, with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. 36 elderly women (age 70.39 ± 2.81 years, weight 72.33 ± 5.63 kg, and height 157.97 ± 3.85 cm) were randomly selected and divided into three groups: aerobic, resistance, and control group. The intervention consisted of aerobic exercise (with an intensity of RPE 5-8, equivalent to 50-80% of maximum heart rate, for 30 to 45 minutes) and resistance exercise (with an intensity of 40-80% of one repetition maximum, 8-10 movements) for eight weeks and 2 to 3 sessions per week. Blood samples were taken 24 hours before the protocol and 48 hours after the protocol to determine serum CCR and P3NP levels. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and independent t-test at a significance level of P≥0.05.
Results: CCR values increased significantly in both aerobic (P < 0.01) and resistance (P < 0.01) groups. P3NP values also increased significantly in both aerobic (P < 0.01) and resistance (P < 0.01) groups. These changes were greater in the resistance training group than in the aerobic group (P < 0.01).
